Safe Driving Tips We All Should Know

If you are planning on doing any traveling in the near future, be sure to make the effort to drive safely.
Being a cautious driver and driving safely is something that we need to be doing at all times. Let’s learn some safe driving tips, so we can be the safest drivers possible.

Become a Defensive Driver

Defensive driving is when you are actively “driving to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others” according to the National Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course. They also say that car accidents are actually the leading cause of death in the workplace. They have both classroom programs and online courses you can take to learn more about what it means to become a defensive driver. They even offer specific classes for teenagers and young adults who are first learning how to drive.

Eliminate or Limit Distractions

Distractions should be eliminated or limited while you are driving so you and everyone around you can be as safe as possible. There are many things you can do to get rid of distractions all together, like putting your phone away. There are also ways to minimize distractions you can’t get rid of like keeping activities in the car to keep kids busy.

Obviously you can’t eliminate or limit the number of children you have in your vehicle. If you have three kids that is what you have in the car – but you can make some rules about acceptable behavior while your children are in the car. Don’t allow your children to fight or climb around in your car, they should be buckled at all times.

Cell Phones

Cell phones take your focus away from safe driving. The best and safest option when it comes to cell phone usage while driving, is to just say ‘no!’ no texting, no dialing, no internet surfing, etc. Don’t do anything with your phone that causes unsafe driving and harm to others. If you need to talk on the phone, use the legal car features that allow you to talk and drive through Bluetooth technology without having to touch your phone. It is safe to suspend conversations during hazardous driving conditions if possible. Make sure that everyone in the vehicle is wearing seat belts, and be courteous to those who are on the road with you.

Getting ready for a long trip? Make sure you get plenty of sleep before your trip, and if you start feeling tired don’t drive. Having the proper amount of sleep before driving is very important to being a safe and cautious driver.

This one is simple, don’t drink and drive. Part of being responsible when you go out for drinks is to coordinate how you’ll get safely home. This has become much easier with the creation of ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft. Now you can essentially call yourself a taxi wherever you might be.

Learn to Drive in Different Weather

Being a cautious driver during weather is very important. You never know when an unexpected storm is going to roll through causing driving conditions to become dangerous. It is always best to be prepared for these types of moments. Whether it’s raining, snowing, icy, etc. you always need to be cautious during these conditions. Slower and more cautious driving is highly encouraged.

Remember it gets darker much quickly in the cold months. Therefore, make sure to account for this fact when you are on the road and travelling. Committing to safety basics is going to make a big difference when it comes to dealing with the possible complications of the season.
