Valentine’s Day occurs every year on February 14th.

Valentine’s Day History

The origins of Valentine’s Day are shrouded in long forgotten legends and stories. It either began as the anniversary of Saint Valentine’s death or as a Christian adaption of an old Pagan holiday.

Saint Valentine was a priest during the era of Rome. It is said that the Roman emperor banned marriage for young men because he needed soldiers. But Saint Valentine continued to perform weddings in secret for young lovers. When his defiance was found out, he was killed.

Other legends say he was killed because he was helping Christian refugees escape Roman imprisonment. While imprisoned it’s said he fell in love and sent love letters from prison signed, “from your Valentine.” Now we use the name “Valentine” to refer to someone we care about or love dearly.

But Valentine’s Day could also have Pagan origins from the festival of Lupercalia. This Pagan festival was celebrated on February 15th. It was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and Romulus and Remus. As they did with many pagan holidays, the Catholic church made their own holiday during the Pagan festival of Lupercalia.

Whatever the true story is, the idea of valentine’s day is that it’s a day of romance, confessions, and affirmations.

Valentines Day for Singles on a Budget

valentines day for singles

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and for many singles out there it can make for a boring and sometimes awkward evening.

The important thing to remember is that there is absolutely no shame in being single on Valentine’s Day. In fact, it’s a great time to get together with your single friends and enjoy the time you have to be together.

After all, the hard reality is, when a friend of yours starts dating, you don’t get to spend as much time staying out late with friends. So, Valentine’s Day can be a day to celebrate the love you share with your BFFs. Need some inexpensive ideas? Try these!

Movie Night

There is nothing better than ordering a pizza, popping some popcorn, and cozying up for your favorite chick flick on Valentine’s Day. The great thing about chick flicks is that there are so many different sub-genres. Pick one that closely matches the situation you and your friends are currently in.

There’s a chick flick for every occasion, recent break-ups, hard-core crushing, a long dating dry spell, a combination of all three, and so many more. More than likely there is a movie out there for you!

Valentines Cookies

Making Valentine’s Day cookies is super fun. And it’s not a sexist activity either. Both men and women can enjoy making, decorating, and eating red-sprinkled cookies! Gather together your single friends and make “friendship” cookies. Add some music, dancing, and/or games, and you’ve got quite the celebration!

Secret Cupid

Secret Cupid is just like Secret Santa. You can do a secret gift exchange amongst your friends for Valentine’s Day or you can send a Valentine’s Day gift package to a neighbor.

Pack up some of those Valentine’s Day cookies, add a rose and an anonymous Valentine’s card, and drop it off at a lonely widow’s house (or someone else who might need a little love). Sharing love of any kind can be a great service to the lonely of heart at this time of year. Not only will it warm their hearts, but it will warm yours too.

Heart Attack

Ever given anyone a heart attack? And we’re not talking about the time you totaled your parent’s new car. Cut up Valentine’s colored construction paper into heart confetti (big and small) and tape them all over the door of someone you love. Sneak around and attack as many doors as you can. Again, this is another great way to share the love with anyone you want.

Scavenger Hunt

Valentine’s Day is one of the best days to do a scavenger hunt. Split up into teams and hit the town looking for a list of different types of couples:

  • couples holding hands
  • cute grandparents
  • couples wearing matching colors

You could add to the scavenger list Valentine’s decorations (who can find the biggest heart or cutest Cupid) or any number of Valentine-related things. Just make a list for people to go find and whoever finds them all first wins!

Public Activities

Many cities, towns, malls, or shops offer fun Valentine’s Day activities and specials. Go out with your friends and see what kind of fun you can dig up. You may score some free chocolate, win a pair of movie tickets, or even bump into the future love of your life at a singles celebration!

There’s no reason anybody should feel down and out on Valentine’s Day. No matter how much (or little) money you have, if you’re married, dating, or single, there is plenty of fun and love to go around this Valentine’s Day!

Valentines Dates on a Budget

valentines day date

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and for many people that means going out on the town to enjoy a romantic date night with their special someone.

Whether you’re at the beginning of a new relationship or several years into a relationship, dating can be a wonderful way to strengthen your commitment and even find out more about each other. However, romantic Valentine’s Day dates can also get pretty expensive. How much a date costs depends on what kind of person you are, what kind of people you date, and what you both enjoy doing, but regardless, dating is often a little hard on the wallet.

Popular dating activities include dining at a nice restaurant, ice skating, going to the movies, seeing a play, and a host of other options that all cost money. It would be a tragedy to stop enjoying date nights purely because the costs are adding up, so we’ve listed some Valentine’s Day date ideas that are creative, fun, and cheap!

Look for Deals

Keep an eye open for deals and discounts so that you can make your dates more economical. There are often nights when movie theatres offer cheaper tickets and of course there’s always happy hour at bars and restaurants.

Also, check out the prices for annual passes to local attractions. Museums, gardens, zoos, and other establishments will usually offer an annual pass that will cost you less in the long term. While this might initially seem expensive, remember that as long as you take a date there two or three times during the year, you’ve saved yourself money.

You can also make use of coupons and Groupons to find deals on fun activities and outings. You might even be able to try something you both have never done before!

Go for a Walk

This might sound like an obvious suggestion, but going on a walk can be a very successful date. Many people insist on doing structured activities like watching a movie or seeing a play, which can be fun, but these choices don’t offer many chances to get to know your date better.

A walk through the park or a nature trail can allow you to get to know each other better. By going on a walk you can also both enjoy some light exercise and wind down together after a long day apart.

Cook Together

While everyone enjoys a night out on the town, there is also nothing wrong with staying in. Making dinner together can be a great way to have fun and get to know each other better. There’s also a lot of evidence that dining in can be a lot less expensive than eating out.

Save some money, make some great food, enjoy leftovers throughout the week, and have fun working as a team together to make a new dish by staying in and cooking together.

Watch a Movie at Home

Here’s another almost free date-night activity! With services like Netflix and Hulu, you can have your own private movie night with popcorn and drinks for less money and more privacy than you would get at a movie theater.

You can also watch whatever you want! So you’re not restricted to only movies that are currently playing in theaters. And if you already have the movie and some popcorn in your pantry, then this date can be basically free.

Go on a Picnic

Just like cooking together, going on a picnic can be a creative way to eat together. A change of scenery can be enjoyable for both of you, and depending on where you go on a picnic, the view can be beautiful too.

You never know too, your picnic spot together might become a new special place for the both of you, a place you’ll go back to again and again.

Volunteer Together

Maybe you both feel passionate about something and want to share that passion. For instance, if you love animals you could both volunteer together at an animal shelter.

Volunteering can be a great way to feel great about yourselves and do something positive together.

Know What Makes a Successful Date

Dates don’t have to be expensive to be great. There is one key element that ensures a great date: spending quality time together.

However, sometimes it is nice to splurge a little on something special. By planning now you should have no problem saving up for something special for Valentine’s but if you get to the big day and realize you’re a little low on cash remember that you can get a cash advance from any of our Check City Locations.

Remember that while there are many activities that can be entertaining, the most important part of a date is that you are having fun together, which can happen at a concert hall, movie theatre, park, or your house. So don’t get caught up on spending money. Just make it fun.

Charm bracelets are a great gift idea because the initial bracelet and a single charm are fairly inexpensive and then you can buy additional charms for future events such as anniversaries, birthdays, etc..

Custom Coupon Booklet

valentine gift ideas

Rather than coupons for cleaning your room and a free night of babysitting that you might have given to your parents, coupons like a free date night or a back rub will go a long way with your significant other. And while the coupon book you give to your significant other will be quite a bit different than the one you gave to your parents you’d be surprised how many of the same ideas carryover such as cleaning up your dishes.
