Starting Running Again? 4 Great Tips to Help

How to Successfully Begin Running

Running can be a great way to get into shape and relieve stress. There are many benefits of running; in fact, running benefits virtually every part of your body, from your muscles to your brain.

But let’s face it, running can be difficult to stay motivated. Many of us are able to go for a few weeks, and then we simply stop running regularly. Pretty soon it’s been months or years since we’ve gone for a run.

In order to reap the benefits, you have to run regularly (2 to 4 times per week). As seasons change and your circumstances evolve, it can be difficult to keep up a running routine—but it is possible. Just remember: pretty soon you’ll have the runner’s body you’ve always craved, and you’ll be feeling great. Here are some great tips on how to start running again.

Don’t Start Too Strong

If you’re starting back up after a long break of no physical activity, then you need to ease into it. Don’t hit the pavement at a full-on sprint (that’s never a good idea even if you’re a seasoned runner; a warm-up is always important). Start with some lunges, go into a brisk walk, and then see how your body takes a light jog. If you feel like you’re dying, then it’s probably a good idea to stop and give your body a chance to recover. Pushing yourself too hard at first puts you at higher risk of injury, as well.

You won’t be able to run for miles when you’re just starting off, so don’t try to. Instead, push yourself a little further each time you run. Try to go one more time around the block, or go just a little further up the trail. You have your whole life to go running—you don’t need to overdo it at the start when your body is just getting used to being active again. This is really important to help you start running again.

Pace Yourself

Running is a cardio workout. That means that the primary benefit is in the way it strengthens your heart. While you’re also strengthening your muscles by running, you’ll need to lift weights and do resistance training to truly build muscle.

The art of cardio is in pacing. You want your heart to get up into that sweet spot, where it’s pumping fast but not necessarily pounding out of your chest. According to the American Heart Association, your target heart rate depends on your age. If you are 20 years old, you want to get your heart in the 100 to 170 range for a good cardio workout. 40 years old? Shoot for 90 to 153 beats per minute.
When you overexert yourself, you’re risking your heart by pushing your heart rate above the recommended zone. Instead, pace yourself and let your heart rate slowly rise into the target zone and then keep it there. You will most likely be able to run longer and enjoy your time running much more.

Proper Equipment

When you are a beginning runner, it is important that you go about running in the proper way. You want to be safe while you are running and you want to be sure that you get the workout that your body needs. You will want to start by purchasing the right equipment.

Start with the shoes that you are going to wear while you are running. Stop by a running store to get your feet fitted for the right type of shoe. Having the right fit is very important.

Stay Motivated

After you have your shoes, make sure that you are going to be able to stay motivated. Join a running group, sign up for a race or create a schedule that you know will keep you motivated as you are running. Make sure that you stay positive as you are running. Although it can be frustrating at first, you have to understand that progress may be slow but it will come. Make small goals for yourself and do not be afraid to celebrate when you reach your goals. Take the time that you need to be sure that you are setting yourself up for success as you begin to run.

Planting Your Own Herb Garden

herb garden

When you grow your own herbs, you will be able to minimize the cost of your groceries by simply using the herbs that you have grown.

Starting an herb garden in your backyard can also be a great way to enjoy fresh herbs and spend time outside. If your yard is in disarray, you can start your herb garden in a raised garden bed. A raised bed is a great way to avoid dealing with tough soil. Using treated soil in the raised plant bed is a great way to ensure that your herbs get all of the nutrients that they need.

Decide Where to Keep Your Herb Garden

Outside?

Having an outdoor garden is a great idea if you want to ever expand your garden to include other plants as well. After you get the knack of caring for herbs you can then move on to other plants like tomatoes or carrots. But before you start your herb garden you will want to ensure that you are planting something that can survive in the current weather and in your geographical area. If you’re going to plant your herb garden outdoors then make sure you plant when the weather is right, and make sure you know what herbs are going to be able to survive in your area.

Having an outdoor garden is also nice because it will get you outside more often. Hobbies are an important part of what makes life interesting. It’s always a good idea to have a few outdoor hobbies to get you out in nature and in the fresh air.

Or Inside?

You can also keep your herb garden indoors. This is especially useful when you want to use your fresh herbs in the kitchen on a very frequent basis. If your garden is inside, then you won’t have to go outdoors every time you want some mint leaves. An indoor garden is also optimal for climates where gardening is more difficult, or the weather is harsher. An indoor herb garden will also allow you to grow fresh herbs year round.

Choose Your Plants

Some people like to plant herbs that have already started growing while other people only like to plant seeds. No matter what you want to plant, you will want to make sure that the soil and the garden area is ready for the plant before you plant it.

Which herbs you choose plant will depend entirely on your preference or what you most commonly use in the kitchen. Here’s a list of ideas to get you started:

  • chives
  • mint
  • parsley
  • basil
  • coriander
  • thyme
  • lemongrass
  • cilantro
  • oregano

You’ll also need some garden supplies and they can be expensive. If your budget needs some extra help don’t be afraid to stop by any Check City location to take out a payday loan. Your Payday loan will have you out the door and planting your garden in no time.

Caring for Your Herbs

After you have planted your garden it will be necessary to spend time weeding and caring for the herbs. Make sure that you set apart a specific amount of time each day to dedicate to your herb garden, so you can be sure it is always taken care of.

Weeding

Weeding is primarily a task you’ll need to get used to if you have an outdoor garden. There are treatments you can use to keep weeds from growing and spreading throughout your garden, but either way you’ll need to dedicate some time to weeding every once in a while.

Watering

As you develop a weeding schedule you will also want to develop a watering schedule. According to the National Gardening Association herbs generally need about an inch of water each week. You can distribute this water rationing more evenly throughout the week by filling a water bottle with an inch of water and spraying your herbs with it throughout the week until the water is gone. But to be extra sure your plants are getting the right amount of watering, you should do a little research on each plant you decide to cultivate and keep notes for important care information like how much water each plant needs.

With consistent weeding and watering, you will be able to reap the benefits of a successful herb garden! Now you can save time and money by cultivating your own herbs at home.

4 Beneficial Tips for Healthy Children

Keeping Your Child Active and Healthy

The rise in child obesity in the United States is very alarming. Children who are overweight suffer short-term and long-term consequences that can affect their health and overall happiness. For example, according to the CDC, obese children are much more likely to develop diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and are at higher risk for many types of cancer as adults. Short-term effects include poor self-esteem and a higher risk for joint and bone injuries.

How can Parents Help?

Parents need to be aware of ways they can work with their child to help ensure their child is healthy and happy. There are many ways you can get your child moving, but every single way requires parents to be aware of the problem and willing to address it.

If you are the parent of an overweight or obese child, you may be hesitant to bring up the subject at home. But there are ways of encouraging healthy habits without making your child feel bad about his or herself. Look for healthy and fun activities you can do as a family. Encourage everyone in the family to participate in a healthier lifestyle. You can also bring in the help of a family doctor or lifestyle coach to add extra positive encouragement.

Exercising more as a Family

Many parents believe that their children should be playing an organized sport to keep them healthy. Not all children enjoy organized sports or thrive in a competitive setting. Work with your child to find a physical activity that you know your child is going to enjoy. This may mean that they love dancing or martial arts. No matter what the physical activity is, encourage them to pursue this interest. Allowing your kids to do this is a great opportunity and exercise for kids.

Whenever you want your child to get out and start playing, do not be afraid to join the game. Doing something with your child is a great way to ensure that your child is going to participate in the activity. You can go for a family hike or a family bike ride. Increasing the amount of time you spend together walking and moving is a great way to keep your child healthy and allows great exercises for kids.

Avoiding and Limiting Unhealthy Habits

Limiting the amount of time your child spends in front of any screen is a great way to ensure healthy children. Make sure that you stick with the limits and that there are consequences for not following the rules. Your child has to understand how important it is to get away from the screens and start moving and being active.

Encourage Healthy Food and Drink Choices

High sugar, high fat, and pre-packaged junk food is one of the main culprits for America’s obesity epidemic. These types of foods are readily available to your children and often times can be hard for them to find a healthy alternative.

Of course, there are plenty of healthy food choices out there, you just need to make them more available in your home. The simple act of choosing one healthy alternative over an unhealthy one (picking an apple over a candy bar, a vegetable tray over a bag of chips) can have a powerful effect on your child’s health. While you’re unlikely to cut out all unhealthy foods and soda from your child’s diet, you can certainly make an impact on their daily choices.

No matter what you say to your child, you will want to lead by example. Make an effort to make healthy food choices yourself, and fill your cupboard and refrigerator up with natural and health-promoting foods and drinks. Switch to water over soda, and always have healthy snacks for your children and teenagers to eat throughout the day.

We hope you have enjoyed these tips on exercise and healthy children. Thanks for reading!

Finding the Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

Getting Ready for Mother’s Day

When you think about everything your mother has done for you, it can be difficult to imagine anything that you could possibly do for your Mother in return on her special day. Of course, the last thing you should do is just give up and do nothing. Your mom deserves the best Mother’s Day you can possibly give her; she’s earned it.

Don’t wait until the Saturday before Mother’s Day—start planning today to get ready to show your mom just how much you appreciate her!

Mother’s Day: The Planning Stages

Nobody knows your mother quite like you do. Think about all the things she does when she has some time to herself. What does she do for fun? What are her hobbies? Finding something that she loves is a great Mother’s Day Gift idea.

The answers to these questions can help you decide on the perfect gift. But even better—you can start to formulate the perfect Mother’s Day events that are tailored to you mom’s interests and passions.

If you think your mother enjoys being surprised (not everyone does), then Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to really surprise her. In the weeks leading up to it, you can pretend like nothing is planned. Avoid inquiries into the day’s activities, and make it seem like it’s not on your mind at all. If you don’t want your mom to be too heartbroken before you surprise her, then you can tell her that you’re planning something simple, like a dinner. Once she’s comfortable and un-expecting, hit her with the big surprise! First, make sure that your mom has the day off. You want to make sure that your mom does not have to work throughout the day and that she is able to relax. Without complaining, make sure that the daily chores are done and get the whole family excited about helping.

Some ideas for Mother’s Day surprises are:

  • Surprise her with a gift card to the spa
  • Make her breakfast in bed, or prepare a lavish dinner yourself
  • Get her away from the house and then clean it from floor to ceiling
  • Create a special Mother’s Day photo album
  • Invite relatives and friends over for a surprise dinner
  • Buy her a weekend getaway package

If your Mother doesn’t like being surprised, then it may not be worth it to plan a huge surprise if it’s just going to make her mad. In this case, you might want to include her in all the Mother’s Day preparations—she’ll probably enjoy planning the details with you, and the whole experience can be incredibly positive.

Gift Ideas

The best gift any mom will receive is her child’s love. What she needs on Mother’s Day are thoughtful gifts! Of course, you’re going to want to go with the standard flower arrangements and card. This is pretty much a given. But you shouldn’t stop there.

The perfect Mother’s Day gift is both thoughtful and practical. A framed photo is thoughtful, and it can be practical in the way that your Mother can place it somewhere in the home so it can be viewed and remembered. These are great Mother’s Day gift ideas.

Many Mothers love chocolate and other sweets and candies. This is definitely an appropriate time of year to indulge her sweet tooth.

A great gift idea is something that you can do together. This could be a game, tickets to a show, or some kind of craft you can both do together. If you don’t want to spend too much money, you can give her the gift of your time—take her on a walk, show her a part of town she hasn’t been to in a long time, etc.

Some Moms don’t mind if you ask them what they want for Mother’s Day (they might even prefer it). This ensures she gets what she wants, and that you don’t stress out trying to figure out the perfect gift.

Making Mother’s Day special is a great way to express your appreciation to your mom. Start planning your Mother’s Day activities now, so you are totally prepared to make your mother feel great on Mother’s Day.

7 Awesome Block Party Ideas

As we are finally starting to see the end of winter, the excitement for summer is inspiring many people to start planning for block parties.

Throwing a block party for your neighbors can be a stressful task, but if you have the right tools in hand, it can be a great opportunity to have fun and enjoy your neighbors. Here are some great block party ideas to help you plan your party:

1. Start Planning Early

A block party is no small affair, and that means you should get your planning started as early as possible. Because this kind of party will involve many guests from your entire neighborhood, you have a lot to plan for, and it can be a huge responsibility.

If you start early, you will have more time to get things organized with your neighbors and set up a date that will work for everyone.

Planning early will also give you the opportunity to buy some of the necessary ingredients and items on sale. Planning early is both a financially beneficial, and can relieve serious stress.

2. Work with Your Neighbors

If you have to tackle the huge responsibility all on your own, you will probably find yourself overwhelmed by the whole ordeal. But with the help of a couple neighbors to cohost (and others to help provide food), you can relieve a lot of stress.

Make sure to ask your neighbors for help so that you can all work together to make the party a success.

Together with your neighbors you can assign different tasks to each host, which will make the responsibility much easier to bear. Just make sure that every duty is taken care of and every host knows what they need to take care of and how to do it. Having help is one of the best block party ideas.

3. Check with City Hall

One thing you have to make sure of in your planning is that everything you prepare for is legal. There are some regulations that you may run into as you are planning your party, so it is always a good idea to check with the folks at the city hall first.

If you plan early enough, you will be aware of noise ordinances so you can stay on top of things, and you may also be able to close off a portion of the street, decreasing traffic and making things safer and more fun for the entire crew!

4. Invitations

Once you have done your preliminary planning, it is time to get the rest of the neighborhood involved. Whether you send your invitations via email, on social media, or handing out physical copies, it is important to get to every neighbor, and let them know early.

You can list on the invitations the opportunity to prepare food or bring side dishes. Then ask guests to rsvp and accept or decline food assignments.

5. Plan the Main Dishes

Although you can assign out sides, desserts, and drinks, main dishes are the responsibility of the hosts, so be sure to start planning out your main dishes menu in advance.

The perfect block party foods are easy to make, prepared in advance, and can please a variety of palettes. So as you plan your main dishes try to choose options that are manageable and interesting for all of your guests.

Make sure to talk to your invitees and ask them if they have any dietary needs you should be aware of. From allergies to sensitivities and food intolerances, you should provide options for each and every one of your guests.

6. Plan Activities

The majority of block parties are spent talking with neighbors and having a good time simply being together. However, it is always a good idea to have a few activities on hand to occupy the children and encourage group participation.

7. Enjoy Yourself

Every party should be enjoyed by all of the guests, and the hosts. So make sure to enjoy yourself on the day of your block party. Be aware that some things will probably go wrong, but don’t let it bother you.

We hope you got some great block party ideas, and be sure to keep following the Check City blog for more great tips.

  • A Handwritten Card. A card can be used to show your mother how much you care. When you write her a card, be sure to be specific and genuine, and really show her the love you feel. This is a great gift on its own, as well as an excellent addition to any other gift you might give. Writing a card can be the most meaningful gift given and is something your mother will cherish forever. Writing a card is one of the best mother’s day ideas.

Bikini Body Workouts

Are you constantly looking for the perfect bikini body workout? Well look no further, we have the 3 best bikini body workouts right here.

Getting into shape for the summer season is less about one specific workout than it is about finding a routine that works for you. What works for some individuals might not work for you. The only way you’re going to find your ideal workout session is by exploring multiple options.

First, you will want to talk to your doctor about a fitness plan that will be good for your body. You want to tailor your workout routine to your body to ensure that you are safe throughout the time you are training.

There are literally thousands of resources on the internet to help you figure out the exercise plan you need to achieve that killer bikini body you’ve been wanting. Here are the best workouts to get swimsuit ready this summer:

Workout 1: Circuit Training

Circuit training is a high-intensity, cardio and muscular workout that can be done in as little as 20 minutes, 3 times a week. There are circuit training routines that can be done anywhere, and many that don’t require any equipment or weights.

Circuit training is all the rage and for good reason. It’s a fantastic form of exercise for getting bikini ready. The high intensity, cardio-based workouts help you shed extra weight and get toned fast.

If you have a hard time carving out time to exercise, consider giving circuit training a shot. Who doesn’t have 20 minutes to spare, three times a week?

Workout 2: Running

If you really want to get into shape and look great, then running might be the answer. Many people utilize running to get and stay healthy throughout your whole life.

While you are working on becoming a runner you will need to have patience with yourself and be willing to start slow so you don’t get injured. In the first week, try only running for 10 minutes, 3 to 4 days. If you feel ready for it, move up to 15 minutes the next week. Then 20 minutes, then 25 minutes, and continue to increase until you reach a 30-minute run.

Finally, be sure that you are letting your body recover after you have run. It is important that your body has time to heal and recuperate after your runs so you can ensure that you are healthy. Part of recovery is ensuring that you are eating the nutrients that your body is going to need to keep you healthy. Eat a balanced diet that your doctor has approved to ensure that you are getting all of the nutrients that you are going to need.

Workout 3: Swimming

If you haven’t figured it out already, cardio is key when it comes to getting slim and toned. Swimming can be a comfortable way to get your heart rate elevated without drenching yourself in your own sweat.

Swimming will also work out very different muscles than any other workout will, and it’s important to find ways to hit all your muscle groups.

Get yourself some serious swimming gear like a comfortable sports swimsuit, a hair cap, goggles, and maybe even some ear and nose plugs. Then hit the water early to swim lap after lap until you feel exhausted and well-exercised. It’s a good idea to bring a timer to the pool too, so you can track your progress and watch your swimming skills improve.

Other Summer Training Tips

If you really want to get fit and toned by summer, then you’ll need to commit to better health in all areas of your life.

Tip 1: Pair Exercise with Healthy Nutrition

Exercising without good nutrition is like trying to drive a car without fuel—you’re not going anywhere.

The true benefits of exercise cannot be achieved unless you’re feeding your body the fuel it needs to grow lean muscle tissue and burn fat. Good nutrition has the added benefit of speeding up your metabolism, so you won’t have to starve yourself.

One great way to start eating healthier today is to swap out unhealthy foods with some healthy alternatives. This could mean trying brown rice instead of white rice or adding some fresh veggies to your pasta.

Just by being mindful of the things you eat will make you reconsider some of the food choices you make throughout the day. Rather than beating yourself up over little miss-steps, try to build a habit of healthy eating over time. In conjunction with regular exercise, you’ll be surprised how much these little eating choices can improve your body and get you one step closer to rocking that bikini on the beach this summer!

Tip 2: Drink Lots of Water

Staying hydrated is really important to your overall health, but it can also help you get the most out of your workout. If you aren’t getting enough water then you might actually not be getting as much out of your workouts.

If you don’t have one already get yourself a water bottle to carry around with you throughout the day. You can even add healthy things into your water like lemon slices or ginger.

Tip 3: Track the Changes

Brainstorm all the foreseeable benefits of exercise and find a way to track them all. Seeing the positive results is one of the biggest ways to stay motivated.

Getting yourself ready for swimwear season can be fun! Instead of focusing on a negative body image, focus on becoming physically and mentally healthier as you workout, stay hydrated, and eat better.

10 Great Tips on How to Keep Your House Cool

Tips to Keep Your House Cool this Summer

I’m always excited when summer is just around the corner. The temperature starts to heat up, allowing for more outdoor activities with family and friends. But with rising temperatures comes rising air conditioning and electric bills. Luckily, here are some simple tips on how to keep your house cool.

1. Close doors and windows

During the day, keep your doors and windows closed as much as possible. Every time a door or window opens, you allow unwanted heat and humidity into your house. This causes your air conditioner to work harder and keep the temperature of your house down. At night, turn on fans to help ventilate the house. Make sure they are rotating in the correct direction so the cool air can be pushed up, and warm air pushed down.

2. Use appliances at night

Try and run heat-generating activities in the late afternoon when the sun is down, and the temperatures have cooled. This includes running the dishwasher, or the washer and dryer.

3. Use ceiling fans

Use ceiling fans to help ventilate your house. Using a ceiling fan is a great way to keep your house cool.

4. Use window fans

Window fans can work great if installed and used properly. During cooler days or at night, window fans can provide ventilation. Place window fans on the downwind side of your home, facing out. Keep windows open in each room to help with the airflow.

5. Replace old air conditioners

Is your central air conditioner old? Replace the outdoor compressor with a more efficient, modern unit.

6. Plant Trees

Consider planting trees in places that could provide shade to your home. This is especially helpful when trees can shade doors and windows. This great way to keep your house cool.

7. Close vents

Vents in unused rooms are often left open, and therefore the air conditioner still ventilates air into that room. If you close the vents, you can redirect that air to be in rooms that are actually used.

8. Open windows

If the area where you live isn’t too hot and humid, open the windows to let the air in the house ventilate. Sometimes it can seem cooler outside than inside, so take a break every now and then and go outside. Coming back in you’ll feel a burst of cool air that will refresh you. It is also very beneficial to keep your windows open when the sun is going down and the day is starting to cool off.

9. Wear the appropriate clothing

If you want to keep cool in your home you can’t wear fur coats. Wear thin, workout clothes, and avoid the color black. Darker colors absorb light and heat, and will therefore keep you warmer than you want to be in the summer.

10. Use ice

In the summer, ice is your new best friend. Eat popsicles, drink smoothies, and just simply put an ice pack on your forehead. All of these things will help keep your body temperature down, and you won’t have to touch your thermostat.

After reading these tips, we hope that you can keep your house cool in the summer and save money. Thanks for reading.
