Stay Healthy During The Holidays, On a Budget

With the Holidays in full swing many people are making their “pre new years resolutions” and trying to stay fit throughout the Holidays. Whether you’re trying to work off the candy you stole from your kids on Halloween or just trying to avoid gaining 10-15 pounds over the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks knowing how to stay fit on a budget can be a HUGE advantage.

So in today’s post we’ll be covering several ways that you can stay fit this holiday season without breaking the bank. Contrary to popular belief, there ARE ways to get your body into shape without spending obscene amounts of money and time. As our society has put more and more emphasis on health and appearance, working out has been a huge love-hate phenomenon in many people’s lives. Due to New Year’s resolutions, gym attendance increases in January but fizzles by the end of the month. It’s back to counting the walk from the parking lot to the office as the daily workout.

For centuries, people have managed to stay in great physical shape without spending a dime. While it is true that their daily work load differs greatly from our nine-to-five desk jobs, there are plenty of ways we can use the rest of our time in healthier ways. So rather than buying expensive treadmills and stationary bikes, follow these tips to increase your physical health while keeping the wallet in check.

Choose a Sport

First, choose sports. If you have the time and opportunity to join a sports team or club, do so! Your expenses will be limited to workout clothes, a pair of shoes, and maybe a ball or two (most of which you probably already have). This can be an opportunity to get a fun, full body workout. Many sports can be enjoyed outdoors in the fresh air and these sports often ensure a full cardio, strength, and endurance workout.

Hate Team Sports?

If team sports are not for you, try running or even walking. For this all you need is a good pair of shoes. Take a walk or jog around the park or neighborhood. You can enjoy the fresh air, listen to music, talk to a friend or just clear your mind as you go. Once you return (or if you’d rather take a break in-between) do some sit-ups and push-ups. Add in some lunges, squats, pull-ups or invent other unique ways to work out certain muscle groups. There is no need for a machine if you have a creative mind.

Make Life More Active

Another idea is trying to make life a little more active. Even if you are an extremely busy person, there are a few ways to sneak in some exercise. Always take the stairs. Play with your kids. Clean your house or office often. Walk down the hall to talk to your colleague rather than calling them on the phone. Ride your bike to work instead of driving. Multi-task as you type, think, or talk. For instance, do wall sits as you talk on the phone and replace your office chair with an exercise ball. These are just a few things you can change that will give you a chance to bend, lift, squat, and simply move throughout the day.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on a nice, healthy body. By following these tips, you can actually save money as you try more natural ways to keep your body active. So, for those on a tight budget, cut out the unnecessary expense of workout equipment and gym memberships and live a naturally healthy life.
