4 Ways to Earn More Money at Work

All too often we find ourselves in dead-end jobs. It doesn’t matter how long we’ve been with the company, we haven’t seen a significant change in salary. Fortunately, we have other ways of earning more money than just waiting for a raise.

Get an education
Obtain additional education. Often times, you can increase your pay scale, simply by increasing your knowledge. College graduates with a Bachelor’s degree earn on average, $20,000 more per year than do high school graduates. You are never too old to go back to school. Many professionals can still be found burning the candle late into the night, studying for an exam. If you already have a degree, go one more step higher. If you are one of the few that has obtained every degree possible in your field, then find other ways to increase your education.

Keep your education up-to-date
Subscribe to magazines, research topics on the internet, read for thirty minutes a day on a subject in your field and you will become an expert. Find ways to keep up-to-date and you will become invaluable to any company. That way, if your company wants to keep you, they’re going to have to pay to make you stay.

Work overtime
Seek out opportunities to stay later. Volunteer for special projects. Tell your boss you want to get more hours in to help the company. Find a way to make yourself valuable after hours and your employer will be hard pressed to keep you from doing it.

Start a small business
If you have a good idea, find a good way to make it work as a side job. Start by telling your friends and family about it. Give some of your services away for free, and then wait for the referrals to start coming in. In many cases, these small side jobs have become full-time alternate careers for those who just had a crazy idea. This way you become the boss. If it takes off, the only limit to your pay-scale will become overhead and your own creative genius. If it doesn’t, then you’ll have spent a lot of free time developing one of your interests, making you a more valuable asset to society. Starting a business is not for everyone, but if you’re willing to give it a shot, you can make a lot of money if your idea takes off.

There are a lot of alternatives to making money than just waiting for a raise or promotion. You can often bring money to you, simply by being proactive about finding it. Whatever your notion, pursue it and see what happens. What do you have to lose?
