Provo’s Year of Transportation

transportation

Nobody likes getting stuck in traffic, but with rental bikes and scooters you can pass the traffic and get around quicker, all while helping the environment and air quality. See what Utah’s city of Provo is doing this year to combat these two issues.

Rental bikes and scooters are becoming increasingly popular in high traffic areas. Provo has become one of those booming, high traffic places, so it’s no surprise that so many transportation innovations have taken place in Provo in the last year or so.

Transportation is a giant part of our lives today. Everyone needs it and we often use it every day, sometimes several times throughout the day. Cities like Provo have a particular need for ample transportation. Not only is it a college city, but it has become a tourist spot, and home to numerous unique start-ups and businesses, attracting crowds from all around.

So because of Provo’s growing urbanization and success, Provo’s city council decided to start what’s being called Provo’s Year of Transportation. The initiative was begun by Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi and has been ongoing since 2018. So far this transportation movement in Provo has included:

  1. Utah Valley Express bus (UVX)
  2. Rental bikes and scooters
  3. Provo airport expansion

Utah Valley Express bus (UVX)

The UVX is a free express bus with its own lane that goes between Orem and Provo station all day, Monday through Saturday. The UVX makes several new and convenient stops along the way to get people to key places between Provo and Orem quickly.

The UVX has been more than a success, giving more than 2 million rides since it began running! Provo has high hopes in having equal success with their other transportation initiatives.

The UVX is easy to pay for because, it’s FREE to all passengers! There’s really no excuse to not take advantage of this new city convenience. For other buses and the front runner, you can now pay for your tickets on the UTA GoRide app, making your UTA trips even more quick and convenient. And if you’re a student or employee at UVU or BYU, then your student or employee ID acts as a free annual UTA pass!

Rental Bikes and Scooters

The newest addition to Provo’s transportation movement is the electronic Spin scooter. Spin is the manufacturer of the scooters, and you use the Spin app to pay for, activate, and ride one of their scooters. But Zagster is the company the city council chose to oversee the overall operations of the scooters. Zagster will address and manage any problems and see to it that the new rental scooter program is a success.

They will also be adding rental bikes to their services in the coming months. The new bike rental program will be a docked system where the bikes are parked in permanent locations. They are planning to get this program up and running by January 2020.

But for now, you can use any number of the bike rental stores that already exist in Provo. Bikes are great for getting around the city quickly and avoiding traffic almost completely. But they’re also fun to rent as an activity with friends, to see the city sights!

  1. JigaWatt Cycles has 5 stars on Google. They have electric bikes for rent, with different bicycle types to choose from.
  2. Gary’s Bikes is the next 5 star review bike place in Provo. Their rental bikes can even be delivered to your home! They also sell bikes and bike accessories.
  3. Hangar 15 Bicylces is the final 5 star reviewed bike place on Google. They sell bikes and bike accessories as well.

Provo Airport Expansion

Did you know Provo had an airport? Because I didn’t! But people are hearing plenty about the Provo airport now since there are plans for major expansions. The first part of the Provo airport expansion is going to include a whole new terminal with 4 more gates. Eventually they plan on adding 10 more gates in total, allowing for more destination services to the airport right in Provo. This will not only make the lives of Provo residents easier, but a bigger Provo airport also means less traffic going into the Salt Lake airport!

Why We Welcome Provo’s Transportation Movement

better environment

Provo isn’t just expanding in order to draw more people and more traffic into town, but rather, Provo is accommodating the traffic already here. By providing these economically friendly transportation options, Provo can better manage its traffic flow, making getting around an easier feat for all.

These new travel options are also environmentally friendly and will help reduce the impact transportation has on the neighborhood’s air quality. The electronic bus and scooters that Provo has opted to use in their programs have a much lower impact on Provo’s environment than other options. For example, using electric buses for the UVX (instead of the traditional diesel buses) can lower emissions by as much as 87 percent!

About Spin Electric Scooters

There are currently 200 scooters in Provo, but if all goes well this number could increase if necessary. A scooter costs $1 to unlock and 15 cents per minute of use, capping out at a maximum $10 an hour. They can go a maximum of 15 miles per hour, and are equipped with GPS. The scooters are great for getting around to nearby places in Provo, for getting in between your other transit stops, or for sightseeing. They are extremely easy to use—you can either download the Spin app with your smartphone to activate and pay for your scooter rental, or if you don’t have a smartphone you can just text the barcode number.

As great as this all may sound for some, there are those who are skeptical about the scooter program and worry about problems arising. For those worried about the scooters being where they shouldn’t and getting in the way, worry no more! Scooters are only permitted anywhere bikes are already allowed, and they will actually shut off if the user tries to ride into an area where scooters are prohibited. For instance, the scooters aren’t allowed on BYU campus, so Zagster and Spin created a geo-fencing system that disables the scooter if it crosses that virtual fence. The scooter program also has up to 40 employees to keep the scooters from piling up at hot spots, and to gather the scooters up again each night and put them back.

How to Rent a Scooter

It is advised that you wear a helmet while operating one of Provo’s rental scooters.

  1. Open the Spin app and find a scooter near you.
  2. With the app, scan the QR code on the top of the scooter to unlock it.
  3. Once you are on the scooter use the right throttle to accelerate.
  4. When you are done just park it at a bike rack, or close to the edge of the sidewalk, where it won’t be in anyone’s way.

Heavy Traffic & Emission Problems Near You?

traffic problems

If you don’t live in Provo, but your city or town has similar problems with traffic congestion or pollution from car emissions, there are some things you can do to help! First of all, every town has a website, or people you can contact if there are changes in your neighborhood you would like to see. For instance, Provo residents can visit Provo.org to stay informed about their community and help make their town a better place. Start by getting more connected with your local community and government!

You can also buy your very own electric scooter or bike! You can buy online or go to a local bike shop near you and purchase your very own eco-friendly ride.

A scooter or bike can even help you beat the morning rush and get to work on time. It can also help you save on transportation costs since bikes and scooters don’t require gas. According to Business Insider the average person spends anywhere from $400 to $1,300 or more on gas each year, depending on the state you live in. Imagine what you could do, and the debts you could get rid of, if you only didn’t have to pay for gas?

If you need this kind of help in your life, but don’t have the funds to buy a decent bike or scooter right now, visit our website and get a Check City Personal Loan so you can start pedaling and saving asap!

4 SMART Goal Examples

SMART-goal-examples

This article is meant to help you understand SMART goals and how to use them. By giving plenty of examples along the way, you can use this goal making tool to your advantage and achieve all your personal and professional goals. You may have heard the acronym SMART goals by now, and you may be wondering what it means and how to use this tool to up your goal setting game.

  1. Professional Goals
  2. Fun Personal Goals
  3. Serious Personal Goals
  4. Financial Goals

What are SMART Goals?

SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. SMART is a mnemonic device that is meant to help you create “smarter” goals. The 5 elements of a SMART goal are the 5 key characteristics of an effective goal that you can actually achieve. So you want the goals you make to be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

Specific

To make your goals specific enough, you want to answer the key “W” questions, who, what, when, where, why? You want to decide your goal and describe it in as much detail as possible. The key is to have a clearly defined picture of your goal in your mind, leaving no room for ambiguity.

Ask who, what, where, and any other details?

Measurable

Making your goal measurable is mainly making it so you have a measurable outcome to work toward, so you’ll know for certain when you are successful or not. So instead of just wanting to lose weight, figure out how many pounds you want to lose. If you want more Instagram followers, think about how many more followers you want. What you can measure is going to be different for each goal, but there is always something you can measure. Maybe you want to be happier, what are some measurable things you can keep track of that will show whether your plans are working? Maybe you can measure how many hours of sleep you get each night to see if you’re getting your full 8 hours each night, or record in a mood journal how you feel at certain times of the day for a couple weeks to try and find patterns.

Ask how?

Attainable

Just like when dealing with your finances you’ll want to determine whether the ROI is worth it. Each goal is going to take time and resources. Are they going to yield worth while results? Is the effort your goal would require doable? Maybe you want to run a marathon but you’ve never run before, so perhaps a better goal to start with would be to run 20 minutes every day. Sometimes you need to take your vision down a bit for a goal that you are actually able to do right now in your life.

What’s the level of attainability?

Relevant

Sometimes we feel pressured by our surroundings to make certain goals. Maybe your parents want you to be a doctor, but you want to be an English teacher. Maybe the people around you make you feel like you need to make intense dieting and weight goals to buff up or slim down, but you’re actually at a healthy bmi(link to how to gain weight on a budget post). Goals take time and effort, they come with their own costs, so above all your goals have to be made for you, by you. So when making a goal ask yourself what your motives are and make sure they’re good, worth it, will actually yield the results you desire.

Ask why?

Time-Bound

Time needs to be a major element in any goal you make. You need to create a plan that aligns with calendar dates and deadlines. Having a due date helps us stay focused, motivated, and kick us into action. Remember that it is here where you can bog yourself down if you’re not careful, so be flexible and plan smartly so you don’t overwhelm yourself. Don’t be afraid to adjust when you need to, sometimes learning your limits and what works best for you takes some trial and error.

Ask when?

SMART Goal Examples

There are different elements that make up our lives and thus there are different kinds of goals we can make for each aspect of our lives. There are the more formal, professional, and serious goals we need to make, and then there are personal and fun goals we want to make. Make goals for your more professional and serious successes, but set goals for yourself as well. Below are some key goal categories to remember:

1. Professional Goals

Specific: (ask who, what, where, and any other details) You want to wake up earlier for work each morning.

Measurable: (ask how) You record on a chart beside your bed every night you manage to go to bed at 10:30 pm. On a similar chart beside the door you mark each morning you are able to leave your house for work at 7:30 am.

Attainable: (what’s the level of attainability) Instead of making a goal to get to work by 7 each morning, you’ve started with a goal to get to work by 8 each morning, because you know working toward this goal is more feasible for you right now.

Relevant: (ask why) This goal is relevant for you because going to work earlier will allow you to leave earlier in the day, giving you more time for other goals and endeavors outside of work.

Time-Bound: (ask when) You’ve set alarms on your phone to remind you when to get ready for bed, and when to wake up and get ready for the day. You’ve decided to give yourself a month to get into this routine, and if you are successful, you’ll reward yourself to a Friday movie night with friends.

professional-goals

2. Fun Personal Goals

Specific: (ask who, what, where, and any other details) You want to make more friends in college.

Measurable: (ask how) You plan social events to go to every weekend this month and decide you have to stay at each for at least a full hour, and must talk to at least 3 people you don’t know. You record the events, how long you stayed, and who you befriended in your journal after each weekend.

Attainable: (what’s the level of attainability) You know you can attain this goal because there are social events you know you’ll be able to go to, and you have a roommate who is very social land willing to go with you to each event.

Relevant: (ask why) This goal is relevant to you because you’re a freshman in college and want to make friends in this new phase of your life. You know your overall wellbeing and happiness will increase by reaching this goal.

Time-Bound: (ask when) You have this month to enact your plan before reevaluating all the new people you met, and continuing with your goal by inviting some of those people to a social event at your own apartment at the beginning of the following month.

fun personal goals

3. Serious Personal Goals

Specific: (ask who, what, where, and any other details) You want to lose 10 pounds.

Measurable: (ask how) You’ll weigh yourself on a scale and record your weight progress on a chart.

Attainable: (what’s the level of attainability) This goal is attainable because you’ve spoken with your doctor and it is ok for you to lose 10 pounds. You also have a dietary and exercise plan that should yield results over time.

Relevant: (ask why) This goal is relevant to you because losing 10 pounds will put you at a healthier weight, give you more energy, and build your confidence.

Time-Bound: (ask when) You schedule regular weigh-in dates for the following weeks to come, and estimate that you should reach your weight loss goal in time for the beginning of summer.

serious personal goals

4. Financial Goals

Specific: (ask who, what, where, and any other details) You want to decrease your debts.

Measurable: (ask how) You know how much overall debt you have, and after sitting down with your budget you can reorganize your spending so you know exactly how much you can spend on debts and other spending each month. This will also tell you exactly how long it will take for you to pay it all off. You can keep a record of when you successfully make each payment, and visually see yourself getting closer to paying all of it.

Attainable: (what’s the level of attainability) You can know the attainability of this goal by how well you budget for spending more on debts and less on other varied expenses. If you ever need help reaching your financial goals and getting back on track you can take out a personal loan at Check City.

Relevant: (ask why) This goal is relevant because you have debt to get rid of, and getting rid of debt will free you to spend more on other things and save for the future.

Time-Bound: (ask when) You have a due date for your bills each month and by keeping on track with these monthly dates, you stay on track to finish paying off your debt in the months you’ve given yourself.

In some ways, goals are how we live our lives. It’s how we make decisions and enact change. Understanding the 5 key characteristics of SMART goal-making can help you level up in your personal and professional life, and more effectively plan for success. As a great artist once said:

“Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.”

Make Your Own Adventure Club and Get Outside!

outdoor-club-adventure

As a kid you were probably forced outdoors at some point during the day to play outside and get your energy out. You probably noticed as you got older that now, if you want to get outside time you have to provide it for yourself. And if you live in an apartment or the city you may not be able to get quality outdoors time just by going into your backyard. If you live in the city you might have to plan your outdoor time even more as you coordinate trips to local outdoor hot spots. Getting yourself out in nature might be easier if you form a like-minded group to get you going. With the steps and tips below you can make your own Adventure Club and explore nature with your friends!

Why Going Outside is Good for You

Get vitamin D. You can actually get vitamin D from sun exposure. Vitamin D is very important to our health and it doesn’t always come in abundance in the foods we eat. One of the best ways to get your daily dose of Vitamin D is through being outside in the sunshine. It can help you have strong bones and protect you from certain diseases and ailments. Improves your immune system.
Opportunity to exercise. Unless you’re sitting in a chair it’s hard not to exercise at least a little whenever you go outside. And every ounce of exercise contributes to your overall health! Even a short stroll outside can do wonders for your physical health.
Elevate your mood. A lot of things about being outside can give your mood a healthy boost. The light, the sun, the fresh air, or the flowers and trees can help you feel a little better about the world if you give them the chance. But there are also studies to support this idea. The National Institute of Health (NIH) found in a study of theirs that just walking outside for a bit each day boosts creativity by 81%. Who knows what creative potential you might unleash just by getting yourself outside a little each day!
Good for children. Studies show that being outdoors helps kids focus better. Spending at least an hour outside every day can increase their focus, overall wellbeing, and help them get better grades.
It can be easy to let kids go run around outside and get all the exercise and vitamin D they need, but as we get older it can become harder to find time to get outside. One way to make getting outside easier is to give your outdoor time some kind of purpose.

  • Exercise outside.
  • Go for a daily stroll at the same time.
  • Get outdoor furniture. Once you have some place to set up camp outside, it can be easier to take things you normally do indoors, outdoors while you soak up some sunshine.
  • Make your outside time a group activity by creating your own outdoors club!

What Kind of Outdoor Club Do You Want to Do?

There are many things to do outside and everyone has different interests. Some people really like swimming, or hiking, or kayaking. What outdoor activities most interest you? These are the things you’ll want to incorporate in the purpose of your outdoors club. Having a clear purpose for your club will help a lot once you start bringing other people into the group and involving them in planning.
You can focus on one thing. You can make it a club all about just one thing you know you like to do:

  • Skiing
  • Hiking
  • A sport
  • Swimming
  • Camping
  • Backpacking
  • Running
  • Kayaking
  • Biking

Or you can involve many outdoor activities. Instead of making a hiking group, you can decide to make an adventure club! That way you can plan activities around all things adventuresome.

Whatever the purpose of your outdoor club, you’ll also want to keep in mind who you want to invite to the group and the level of difficulty everyone will be ok with. For instance, hikes and trails are often ranked by difficulty. They can be considered easy, moderate, or hard. So while you are deciding your club’s purpose remember to also consider the level of experience and difficulty you want to involve, and remember to disclose these things to those you invite to the group.

Who Do You Want in the Group?

Outdoor groups can be for all groups of people! You can make no restrictions about who can join the club, or you can decide to make your group exclusive in some way. For example, if you’re a dad looking to bond with your kids through fishing, you might make a fishing club specifically for dads and their kids. You can also restrict the group to certain age groups, like if you’re interested in getting to know more people your age.

Logistics

The last thing you’ll want to figure out before publishing your new group is all the logistics. Below are a couple questions to consider and make decisions about before going live with your new club idea.

  • How are people going to get places?
  • How are you going to get equipment?
  • How will your group stay in contact?

Maybe you’ll expect everyone to use their own cars and equipment to get places, or maybe you’ll want to talk to local rental places for any equipment your group might need. You can also keep in contact with your group in many ways. If you all know each other you can simply create a group text message. Or you can make a Facebook group, or use other messaging apps like Slack, or GroupMe. There are almost infinite options nowadays for where to keep your group’s base of operations.
flyer-outdoors-club

Now that you have your group all set up you can start reaching out for people to start joining. One great way to get members is to create a public Facebook group online. You can also try inviting some people you know and ask them to bring a member or two of their own.

You can also make flyers to hang up around town to meet new people! A flyer doesn’t have to be complicated, just make sure it has all the information they’ll need.

Fun Ideas

There are endless ways you can really have fun with getting more involved in your community and getting to know new people through starting a club like this.

  • Bring snacks.
  • Have a group potluck event.
  • Be educational. You can make a presentation about outdoor etiquette, safety, or hire a trial guide to teach your group about different plants you come across during your hike.
  • Do volunteer work every other month. You can volunteer to clean up a place you visit.
  • Make a website, a blog, or social media accounts for your group and post about the trips and activities you do!

Other Good Ideas

  • Have regular meetings.
  • Assign responsibilities to different people. You can nominate different group members to be the President, Vice President, Trip Coordinator, Treasurer, or Social Media Manager.
  • Fundraise for your trips. You can have a group yard sale or bake off to save up money for your bigger trips or activities. Sometimes your outdoor adventures are going to require fast funds while you’re in between paychecks. If your Adventure group finds itself short on cash, you can always get a payday loan or a personal loan from Check City and pay it back when you return from your trip.

Getting yourself outside is important. The great outdoors are meant to be appreciated and can shower you with mental and physical benefits. You don’t have to go through the trouble of making an outdoor club to get outside, but it can help motivate you to make going outside more of a habit, and who knows! You might just make some great new friends along the way.

7 Tips for Workplace Wellness

tips for workplace wellness

In order to take good care of your work you first have to take good care of yourself. Taking care of your well-being will not only help you in life, but it will help you in the office as well.

  1. Get Quality Sleep
  2. Fuel Your Body Effectively
  3. Exercise
  4. Prevent Eye Strain
  5. Decorate Your Desk
  6. Learn to Unwind
  7. Have Pursuits Outside of Work

Believe it or not, but even an office job can have its own hazards. You may not think about it but everything from vending machine food and sitting all day can cause serious health problems. But don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to combat these workplace hazards and increase office wellness. This can mainly be done by having a work-life balance. Everyone always seems to be talking about having a good work-life balance, but what does this balance really mean? Ultimately your wellness at work is about taking care of your physical and mental health.

Take Care of Your Body

physical well-being

Get QUALITY Sleep

Sleep is a factor that greatly affects your performance throughout the day as well as your physical and mental well-being. But it isn’t enough to just go to bed and hope for the best. You don’t just want enough sleep you want quality sleep. There are ways you can optimize your sleep so that you are getting the most out of your nights.

Go to bed and wake up at the same time

This will help your body to adjust to a regular schedule. Once your body is used to this schedule falling asleep each night and waking up each morning will become much easier. Set an alarm or reminder for when you need to start getting ready for bed to help you learn to wind down at the same time each night.

Stay hydrated

You actually get dehydrated as you sleep which can cause a dry and hoarse throat in the morning, leg cramps during the night, and an overall lack of quality sleep. You lose hydration in the night through breathing or a dry or warm environment in your bedroom. Another thing that can cause night dehydration is exercising late in the evening. To combat this issue, hydrate yourself well throughout the day, keep a water bottle on your nightstand, and keep your room temperature on the colder side with a humidifier turned on while you sleep.

Fuel Your Body EFFECTIVELY

Your body is like a complicated machine and in order to work at top performance levels and feel its very best your body needs fuel that it can work with. There are a lot of foods out there today that might be quick, easy, and immediately filling, but they won’t provide your insides with the proper nutrients to function at full capacity and eventually you’ll feel this as you feel more and more lethargic throughout the workday. You can fuel your body with a lot of things, but only certain nutrients will give you effective nourishment to give you optimal health and energy.

Eat wholesome meals

Make healthy meals at home and take healthy meals with you to work. Many of your coworkers might be going out to eat every day and though this might be fun in the short term it probably isn’t beneficial in the long term. Healthy homemade lunches will improve your physical wellness and improve your spending! You can also start bringing in healthier treats for your coworkers to help improve workplace wellness as a whole.

Eat wholesome snacks

If your stomach is growling for the majority of the day, you will likely crash before the end. Make sure you have the right nourishment going into your body and it will pay off. Even simple snacks can help keep you going between meals. Nuts, fruits, and cut up vegetables can really give you the energy you need to make it through the day.

Cut down on sugars

One of the biggest issues office workers fight on a typical workday is lethargy. Sugar intake can be one of the major contributing factors to your lethargy. Take note of the sugar content of what you are consuming in a regular day and you’ll see how prevalent this ingredient has become in a lot of our foods.

Then remember, while you pick your foods each day, that each gram of sugar adds to unpleasant feelings like bloating and tiredness. Make sure you take these tips to heart in order to keep your body happy and healthy throughout the workday and throughout your life. You will be grateful when you still have energy after retirement!

Stay hydrated

You would be shocked to know how much staying hydrated can improve your workplace wellness. There is nothing more important than drinking enough water throughout the day. It doesn’t matter whether it is summer or winter, your body is made up mostly of water and you need to continually replenish it. Don’t wait till you are thirsty to start drinking. It is much better to have a set amount that you plan on drinking throughout the day.

In general it is advised that you drink 8 glasses of water a day. It can help to have a designated water bottle that you keep with you throughout the day to drink from. If you have trouble getting yourself to drink enough water each day try drinking with a reusable straw. This can make drinking enough liquids faster and easier. Another thing you can do is put things in your water to make drinking water more fun! You can add cut up fruits and vegetables, mint leaves, and many other things to your water to make staying hydrated healthy, tasty, and fun.

Exercise

Exercise may seem like a dauntingly intense habit to get into, but it’s actually one of the easiest ways to boost your well-being because any amount of it will help. Even if you only go out of your way to exercise 20 minutes on weekdays, that’s still better than no exercise at all.

The average person is advised to get 75 to 150 minutes of physical activity into each week. This averages out to be around 30 minutes a day. Thirty minutes really isn’t asking too much of your time and there are a million ways you can get this 30 minutes of physical activity into your day without having to do crazy intense workout sessions at the gym. You can simply go on a walk, plan a hike for the weekend, go swimming, biking, or take a physical class like dancing or yoga.

Put Exercise on the Agenda

You can implement a routine of exercise into your day before or after work. Getting yourself to exercise will be easier if you schedule it into a specific time of day. In fact, a study found that working out at the same time each day made exercise more effective.

Work Out at Work!

You can also find ways to grab some exercise while you’re at work! There are hundreds of exercises you can do at your desk. Everything from simple stretches to replacing your chair with a stability ball can greatly improve your health.

Whatever you choose to do, change things up and get your body moving as much as possible. By the end of the day when most of your coworkers are crying about sore backs and tired limbs, you will be ready to keep going with your day.

Office Friendly Exercises

  • Practice good posture
  • Leg raises
  • Chair dips
  • Use weights at your desk
  • Ab workouts with your swivel chair, or stability ball
  • Lean on your desk to do planks or pushups
  • Use a standing desk
  • Go for a walk around the building
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator

Prevent Eye Strain

If you work in an office chances are you also get a lot of screen time at work. Staring at screens all day can put a strain on your eyes and even cause headaches and nausea after a while. But you can help prevent eye strain by getting a blue light filter on your screen, or blue light filter glasses to wear at work. It is also a good idea to take a break or two from your screen while at work to give your eyes a rest.

Take Care of Your Mind

mental well-being

Decorate Your Desk

Decorating your desk will make you happier, and liven up your workspace. You can get plants, you can set up some photos, you can decorate with cool looking bulletins and white boards, or splurge on a special mug or thermos just for your desk.

Learn to Unwind

You don’t have to pay for an expensive spa to still have your own personal spa day. There are endless things you can do to unwind and everyone relaxes in different ways. For some people relaxing may include hanging out with friends and going out. For others, relaxing may mean staying home, taking a warm bath, watching TV, or reading a good book. In order to learn how to unwind you need to learn more about yourself and what relaxation techniques work best for you.

  • Learn about mediation
  • Keep a journal
  • go outdoors
  • listen to music
  • have a spa night
  • read a book

Have Pursuits Outside of Work

It will give you a special sense of accomplishment to have your own personal pursuits outside of your job. And if you need help with funds to make your club or go on a weekend getaway you can use a Check City Personal Loan!

  • Volunteer
  • Join a book club
  • Start your own group or club
  • Join a recreational or intermediate sports team
  • Make personal goals
  • Plan vacations and getaways
  • Take a class

Having workplace wellness is all about having a work-life balance. Having a work-life balance is all about taking care of both your body and mind. If you remember these key principles of taking good care of yourself than not only will your life and health improve, but you will actually become more successful and productive at work as well!

4 Super Simple Warm Up Exercises

If you’re born to run, then it may feel like nothing is holding you back once you break past that starting line. But unless you’ve gone through some warm up exercises, you could be setting yourself up for poor performance or even an injury.

Warming up before a race or your morning jog is essential to preventing injury and getting the most out of the exercise. Going from a resting state to a full-out run is a jolt to your body’s muscular and respiratory system. Unless you’re properly warmed up, it’s easy to pull or tweak a muscle, and it will be more difficult to set a sustainable pace.

To help you craft the perfect set of warm-up exercises—one that you can use before your next marathon or 5k—I’ve drawn from the experts at Runners World and the Little Wing professional running team. Here are the basics:

Start With a Walk

Looking for the perfect transition from rest to running? Why not try the exercise that is half way between standing still and running—walking.

Walking will get the kinks out of your joints and muscles without putting enough stress on them for injury. Before a race, walk for 3 to 5 minutes, letting your muscles warm up and helping your blood flow.

The Basics of Dynamic Stretching

When it comes to stretching warm up exercise the way many of us were taught to stretch in middle school gym class is all wrong for warming up. Stretching and holding—where you hold the stretch for as long as 60 seconds—is called “static stretching,” and it can actually contribute to injury when done right before exercising. (Static stretching isn’t all bad; it’s beneficial post-workout and even as a break from your daily routine.)

The kind of stretching you should do before running is called “dynamic stretching.” It takes some of the same stretching motions, but you do them while remaining in motion. Some common and easy dynamic stretches include:

  • Lunges
  • Knee to chest
  • Bear crawl
  • Butt kicks
  • Skipping

For a demonstration of these stretches and plenty more like them, check out this awesome video from Little Wing.

Get Your Heart Pounding

If you want to be in full running mode right as you cross the starting line, then you need to increase your heart rate and blood flow.
After you’ve done your dynamic stretching, it’s time to ramp up your warm up. Start with a light jog for a few minutes (at least two minutes). Transition into a brisker pace toward the end of your jog, and then decelerate.
Repeat the accelerate/decelerate pattern a few times right before the race starts. By the time the gun goes off, your body will be primed for the perfect race.

Get Out and Race!

Setting a goal, such as a race, is a perfect way to motivate yourself to run regularly; research 5k’s, half marathons, and marathons in your area. If you’re looking for some excitement, try an obstacle course style race such as Tough Mudder.

Just don’t forget to warm up before the big race!

7 Tips for Quick Workouts

friday
“I want to exercise, but I just don’t have any time.” Does that sound familiar?
Many people claim they have no time to exercise, but it’s easier than you think to squeeze a quick workout into your day.

Here are some tips on how to get moving:

Start Small

Anything is better than nothing, even if it is only 5 minutes. HIIT (high intensity interval training) consists of short bursts of exercise including cardio and weight lifting. You can find all sorts of HIIT workouts on-line and even phone apps to keep you on track during your sets.

HIIT training also has the benefit of increasing strength and endurance faster than a regular exercise program. Who knows, a 5 minute quick workout could eventually turn into 10, then 30 or more if you stick with it!

Use Alternate Methods of Transportation

A great way to get a quick workout is to fit exercise into your daily life. Bike, walk or run to work if possible, or just park farther away than you usually do and take the stairs instead of the elevator. Even better, take two stairs at a time or increase your speed each time on the way up.

Walk and Talk

Instead of sitting while chatting on the phone or talking to a coworker, take a stroll. Could you have that meeting with a co-worker walking instead of sitting in a conference room? What about actually seeing your friend face to face and taking a walk instead of endless texting? Even better, add a pedometer to all these walks. Studies show that if you wear a pedometer you will be more likely to challenge yourself to take more steps during the day!

Get Quick Workouts at Work

Does your office have a gym? Could you spend your lunch break there or take a walk instead of staying at your desk? If you are strapped to your desk all day you can still fit in some exercise. Take frequent breaks (set an alarm if you have to) to stretch or do a set of squats or calf raises, etc. You could even bring in a small set of weights and do some 1-5 minute sets of lifting exercises. Try switching out your chair for a stability ball (which works your core all day long).

Work Out at Home

If you have kids it might seem impossible to exercise, but there is hope. You can strap your kids into the stroller and bring them with you on a walk or run or simply join in their silliness and play with them. Try playing a game of soccer or baseball.

You can also do small exercises during mundane chores like squats to pick up toys or calf raises while cooking dinner; lift that bottle of laundry soap a few times before measuring. Workout DVD’s are great because you can pause them to help a screaming baby and come back.

Can’t miss your favorite TV show? Workout while you watch! You could shed pounds by simply getting off the couch each episode.

Ante Up

If you have a personal investment in your workouts in general, even your quick workouts you are more likely to follow through. There are tons of weight-loss competitions or workout schedule prizes available. If you can’t find one, start your own with your friends, winner gets the jack pot! If you are a runner, sign up for a marathon or a race, you will have to do some training to finish.

Stay Accountable

Track your progress and record each work out. Not only will it help you feel better and motivate you, you are more likely to keep going or at least notice if you are slipping.

You will experience even more motivation if you can find a source of support: a spouse, personal trainer, friend, coach, whoever can cheer you on and remind you of your commitments and goals.

3 Essential Hiking Tips for Beginners

friday

It’s fall; a great time to try out some of those hikes that looked like an exercise in self-inflicted misery over the hot summer months. Do you have any destinations you’ve had a hankering to try? Was your interest “peaked” by any of those social media posts by friends who endured the misery of 90+ Fahrenheit temps for the perfect picture at the end of the trail? No matter where you end up hiking this fall, these hiking tips for beginners can make sure you get started on the right path… pun intended.

Whatever your fitness level may be, hiking is a great way to improve on it. Check your weather forecast and start planning your adventure, because there’s probably not a whole lot of time between now and skiing season to view the incredible color explosion that is autumn in the Rocky Mountains!

We’ve all heard the old cliché of the journey being more important than the destination, but when it comes to the joys of hiking, it is absolutely true. Choosing and completing a hike is just as much about enjoying each moment, each new scene, and making lasting memories, as it is about accomplishing what you set out to do.

Hiking Tip #1: Remember Your Skill Level

However, memories and scenery aside, while an easy hike can sometimes be a great break for everyone, choosing hikes that are consistently easier than your skill level can get boring. The same can be said of choosing hikes that are too strenuous. Overworking yourself while hiking is a great way to ensure that you’ll never want to hike again.

A great hiking tip to keep in mind is that if you actually want hiking to become a regular and enjoyable part of your life, choose manageable hikes that are a little bit challenging but have a point of interest – like a waterfall or natural “wonder” at the end. This will ensure that you are not only capable of completing the actual hiking, but that you are motivated by the visual reward at the end.

Hiking Tip #2: Understand the Logistics

When choosing a hiking path or trail, it is important to plan the logistics carefully. There are many great websites and blog posts full of hiking tips about interesting hiking trails, their skill and difficulty level, and sights to be had at the end of the path.

Another great hiking tip is that it’s always a good idea to search these for any information that can prepare you in a way as to make your hike a greater experience.

Here are a few things you may want to consider as you plan the details of your journey.

  • How long is the hike? If your hike will take more than a few hours, you may want to consider ramping up the outdoor experience by camping on the trail.
  • Are dogs allowed on the trail? If they are, maybe you should bring your furry friend along!
  • Where will you be? If you plan to hike alone, it is especially important to let someone know where your hike starts and ends so they can help track you down in an emergency.
  • Do you have enough supplies? Taking too many supplies on a short hike can make for serious work. But getting caught halfway through a long hike without food or water can also have serious consequences. Find the balance. Carry water appropriate to your needs and especially for warmer temperatures.
  • What is the weather like? Dressing appropriately can mean the difference between an exciting adventure and a torturous trek, so make your clothing decisions wisely. If you’re hiking in a canyon be especially sure that there is no possibility of rainfall and try to avoid areas prone to flash flooding. Summer is a better time to attempt these trails.

Hiking Tip #3: Be Flexible

Having a good plan in place is really important, but sometimes, unexpected things happen. If you run into any difficulties you hadn’t planned for, don’t be afraid to call off your hike or change your itinerary.

Paying attention to the environment you are in is a very important part of successful hiking. If you get lost or experience trouble, a great tip to know is to make sure to stay put and try to contact your friends or family.

Hiking is an exciting way to improve your fitness and get outdoors, so follow these tips and make the most of your next hike! Follow our blog for more useful tips. Check City also offers financial services to keep your budget in great shape!
