Give Back With The Warm Hearts Coat Drive

Fall in is full effect here in Utah and as the temperatures start to drop most people are excited to start planning their Holiday feasts or get out and start their Holiday shopping but for many of the less fortunate people accross Utah the cold weather is much more serious matter. While most people are just able to grab a coat on the way out the door, many people in the state don’t have coats or the means to buy their own coats and that is why Check City is happy to announce that for the seventh year we’ll be participating in the Warm Hearts Coat Drive. This year like many in the past Check City is excited to be teaming up with Fox 13 and Catholic Community Services of Utah. By combining our efforts with those of Fox 13 and Catholic Community Services we’re hoping to be able to get more donations than any year in the past.

Last week Big Buddah was able to come and discuss the coat drive with one of our Managers, it was a great time for a great cause!

To be a part of something great this Holiday season, take any coats, jackets, sweaters, blankets or other cold weather gear that is in good condition and that you’re not using anymore and drop them off at any of our 28 Utah locations. Check City thanks you for your participation and we’re extremely excited to see just how much good we can do for the community this Thanksgiving season.

Consider volunteering at a local soup kitchen to help feed the poor and homeless. Soup kitchens are always looking for people to help setup the service area, collect the food, prepare and serve the food. Deliver meals to the elderly in need. You can usually find opportunities at local churches or organizations to deliver meals to the elderly or others. For a small investment of your time, you can help make a family feel connected and happy during the holidays.

Visit people in nursing homes or hospitals. You can call a nursing home, or hospital, and ask if they have someone who might need company on Thanksgiving. By determining the age and health of the people you’ll visit, you can tailor your visit to their needs. For instance, you might talk, sing, or enjoy a meal with the residents. Consider taking a small gift to make someone’s day a little brighter.

Helping Others and Yourself by Giving Frugally

The recent so labeled Superstorm Sandy has brought as much hope and evidences of the human spirit to individuals as it has brought damage and destruction to the affected areas. The storm has brought together helping hand from all walks of life and has forced communities to band together in an effort to help each other persevere through this hard time. Sandy has also played a role in reminding people across the country that charitable services are more than something nice to contribute to occasionally but are also valued and necessary for those less fortunate and in need.

This powerful storm that has caused so much damage has brought out the good of human nature. Caring and helping have become the standard whereas selfishness and greed have been shelved. With the holiday season approaching, people across the country hope to see this trend of lifting others increase and efforts to do so are cropping up around the nation.

For those with a strict budget, however, the opportunity to donate to charitable institutions may seem like a financial incapability. For those who find themselves in the predicament to donate but who are not sure if they can afford it, or for those who wish to be frugal while still helping others, consider some alternative ways to donate to various charities. One way to give a meaningful donation to a charity without having to write a massive check is by giving of one’s self.

Giving of your time to help volunteer in any capacity with any charity is one way to donate value without donating monetary value. And in many ways, spending the time to help is in many ways is more rewarding than writing a big check.

Another helpful donation to charities beyond giving simple money is be donating unwanted or expendable possessions such as old clothes or furniture to those institutions that can use them to better the lives of others.

By giving of one’s time and possessions, an individual or family who wish to remain financially responsible and frugal while giving to others can be of as much more help to the needy as those who donate finances only.

Helping Others and Yourself by Giving Frugally

Charity Gives Back More Than It Takes

Charitably contributing your money, supplies and time is a proven method of improving your financial situation. You give away money, and somehow you end up richer then you were before.  It’s counter-intuitive right? But it’s true. People, who have done it, swear by it. So what is it about giving more of yourself that will turn around and help you too?

Some attribute it to God, others to fate. A plausible explanation that could support either argument is charity’s effect on the mind.

Feel Goods
Each time you give something to someone else in need, you feel good about it. You are happier than you are normally and realize at some deeper level that you’ve done something good with what blessings of monetary wealth that you do have. The better you feel about what you’ve done, the more you’re okay with having less money, which leads into the next point.

Being Okay With Spending Less

As you begin to realize that you have less money, you become more money conscious, and hence, more okay with saving it. You will more likely forgo the extra, unnecessary expenses in life and find better ways to save. Instead of buying name brand cereal, you might go for the generic brands that taste almost exactly the same. Instead of buying the new 56” HD TV, you’re going to be happy with your 37” flat screen you bought five years ago.

There really is something to realizing that you can use your money for something better than helping yourself. When you help others with money, you value it less in your own life and want to give more to help other people. The less you value money, the less you’re going to spend it on yourself. Give to others and you’ll end up giving more to yourself than you ever have before. Oxymoron’s are what seem to drive life sometimes.
