Haitian Debts Forgiven by Inter-American Development Bank

The Inter-American Development Bank agreed to forgive millions of dollars in debt owed by Haiti due to the recent earthquake devastation. The debts forgiven add up to about $479 million dollars and after a vote, the board of directors decided to forgive the debt and in addition have pledged their future support in the quantity of 2 billion dollars over the next ten years.  They also hope to help rebuild the country with the hope and courage they need to continue over the next few years. Does Government Debt Have a Cap?

As the United States’ debt continues to rise an average of $3.93 billion per day, concern about the debt seems to rise exponentially. People are beginning to ask where the cap is and what will happen then? Carmen Rienhart, an economist from the University of Maryland, and Kenneth Rogoff, an economist from Harvard, predict 90% of gross domestic product as the maximum level that countries can obtain in debt before they cannot simply grow out of it. In their article to be published in the American Economic Review, Reinhart and Rogoff analyzed the trends in 44 countries over 200 years.
