Here on the Check City blogging team we’re always looking for ways to save ourselves as well as our readers a buck or two, any way we can. So awhile back when we came across a popular Youtube video titled “Ghetto Big Mac” we were immediately intrigued. In the video a couple guys go into their local McDonalds and claim they can build a ghetto version of the Big Mac for a dollar, plus half a small fry, so realistically it’s more like $1.50.
The trick was that they were able to add several upgrades to their burgers for free. Since the release of this video we’ve seen our local McDonalds stop allowing a lot of the upgrades you’ll see in this video but a lot of times it will vary depending on which McDonalds you go to. In the video they start with a normal double cheeseburger off of the dollar menu and then they make the following changes to it:
- Ask to have the sesame seed bun instead of the normal bun.
- Ask for the full sized onions instead of the diced onions.
- Ask them to hold the ketchup but put big mac sauce on the burger instead.
In addition to the double cheeseburger they also order a small fry, to split between the two of them. This small fry will be used to replace the middle bun that the big macs have. While this might seem like a lot of work for a little money, you have to think that a lot of people in the work force go out to eat every single day, and the price of a real big mac is anywhere from $3-$4 depending on where you are in the United States.
If you were to go with this cheap version each day, or even use it to add some variety to the dollar menu you could realistically save $2-$3 a day which over the duration of a year can end up saving you hundreds of dollars.
By working the system they were able to get more for their money, which got us thinking, what other menu items can be enhanced to get the most bang for your buck. In tomorrow’s post we’ll reveal one of the menu hacks that our team was able to come up with which can save you a couple bucks on the normal menu price a certain burger at Wendy’s.
