Hate Waiting For Your Tax Return?

Even though it may not seem like it, the IRS is beginning to realize that people like to get their tax returns back as quickly as possible, that’s why they’ve implemented things like e-filing, their iPhone App and other online resources. If you’re like most of Americans you know exactly what your tax return money is going towards weeks before you actually get it so there’s nothing worse than having to sit around and wait for your tax return once you’ve filed it.

According to the IRS nine out of ten refunds are issued in less than 21 days.

So how can you track the status of your refund while you wait? You can get to the “Where’s My Refund” tool by using their mobile app called IRS2Go or you can visit the IRS website. You can start checking on the status of your return within 24 hours after they’ve received it. This means that information will generally be available within 24 hours after the IRS has received your efile return, or about 4 weeks after you mail in a paper return. All you need to check on your return is a copy of your tax return that way you will have all of the information that you need like your social security number, your filing status, and the amount of the refund that you’re expecting.

Something to keep in mind is that the tool will give you messages about the 3 steps in the refund process. Those steps are when the return is received, when the refund is approved, and when the refund is sent. As for how often you need to check to see if you have a new message, the system is updated every 24 hours, usually overnight so you only need to check about once a day. The “Where’s My Refund” tool provides the most complete and up to date information that the IRS has, so there’s no need to call unless the tool tells you to. Also, the “Where’s My Refund Tool” provides information for the most current refund returned in the recent year and does not include information on amended returns.

Issues that can slow down your refund include errors on a tax return, and returns identified for additional IRS review. If the IRS ever needs more information to be able to process your returns, they’ll notify you otherwise you can usually expect to get your refund within 21 days.
