VISA and MasterCard recently started offering gift cards that act as debit cards. You may have seen them masquerading as debit cards, but didn’t know what to think when you saw they were labeled “gift cards” as well. Rest assured, most people were caught off guard too. But they are exactly what they purport to be, a debit and gift card combined into one.
It is an ingenious plan. Come birthday time, instead of giving cash or buying a gift card for one place, why not give them a gift card that acted as a debit card anywhere they wanted to go? The card works by essentially opening a one-deposit checking account for a predetermined balance. The “account opener” makes a deposit for the predetermined balance and then gives the debit card to someone else to use at their leisure. It acts in every way as a debit and a gift card until the balance is depleted. The account opener is at no risk from further withdraws as the card is not hooked up to his or her account.
The next time you’re thinking about what to get a friend for his or her birthday, make the choice easy. Come to Check City and get them the dinner and a movie, or iTunes and a coke gift card.
