Being Safe in the Pool

If you are planning on going swimming this summer, then it is very important that you do everything you can to be safe- especially if you have kids. Swimming is a fun activity that can make for some great memories. It is an excellent way to cool off and to get out in the sun and enjoy the day fully.

Being safe when using the pool is often a matter of common sense, combined with limiting opportunites for accidents. Here are some of the things thta you can do in order to make sure that everybody has a safe experience.

To begin with, always make sure that you are accompanied by someone else. This rule should also extend to children, if they are going to use a pool. The buddy system and going in groups is one of the best ways to make things safer in nature. A lot of pool fatalities occur because the person was alone. With other people right next to you, it is much easier to be helped.

Next, do not push anyone to do anuything that is beyind their skill level in the water. Even with other people around, there is no reaosn to push someone to swim out into deep water or to do tricks or races or anything else that is outside of their comfort zone.

Diving is something to be avoided, unless there is a diving board situated over deeper water. There are a lot of spine and head injuries which occur every year because of people slamming into the bottom of pools after diving into shallow water. Unless there is a special area for it, diving should not be happening.

When it all comes down to it, being safe in the pool is a matter of calling upon common sense and using good judgement. There is no reason why people cannot have fun and be safe at the same time.
