Getting involved in the community can be a great way to cultivate meaningful relationships with those around you. As you begin to cultivate these relationships, you may feel a growing sense of belonging and be able to be a happier part of the community you are in. There are many different ways that you can start becoming more active in the community. A great place to start is a local community center. Show up at the community center during business hours and start talking with someone that works at the center. Explain what your interests are and when you are available.
As you talk with a community center worker you can start to narrow down the areas that you would like to be involved in. You may find that there is a church that you would like to start attending or even a library that you would like to volunteer at. Pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone may be difficult but is often times required to ensure that you are going to be able to become involved.
Talk with your neighbors and friends in the area about ways that they become involved in the community. You may learn about a youth organization, a food bank or even a retirement home in the area that is interesting and exciting to you. As you are learning about your options, do not be afraid to call the organization or group and ask if there is anything you can do to help. This way, you can be sure that you are going to be actively involved in the organization that you choose.
