The first episode of the final season of Lost premiered yesterday answering the questions that have been brewing in fan’s minds since the end of the previous season. This sixth and final season has been long waited for in anticipation.
The most shocking revelation was that John Locke is now the smoke monster and man in black. John Lock had been killed by Ben in the previous season, but an entity had taken over his body that was unknown until last night.
Damon Lindelof, the executive producer, said, “People would ask us all the time, ‘What’s the monster?’ It was really fun to finally be able to say, ‘You’ve been asking the wrong question. You should’ve been asking who.’” Lindelof believes that the connection fans had with Locke and their hope that he was not really dead hindered their ability to see who he had really become.
When Terry O’Quinn found out that he was the smoke monster he was shocked and said, “There goes a bunch of possibilities — and here comes a whole bunch of new ones!” As the monster, Quinn was easily able to kill all of Jacob’s bodyguards, but was surprisingly afraid of black ash.
Following this revelation, fans have a new question. Is this going to lead to the typical good vs. evil plot? When questioned, Terry Quinn would not comment on whether he was going to be the ultimate evil character.
We also discover that Juliet’s detonation of the bomb was successful in resetting the future, but there are many oddities involved. Two time lines were created. In one,the Oceanic 815 landed safely at LAX, but the island was deep under water. In the other the characters were still unhappily stuck on the island.
The premiere mostly stuck with the new time line, where the Oceanic 815 landed safely. There were many quirks in the new future. Desmond was on the plane, and mysteriously disappeared. Hurley owned a chicken franchise and Rose said “It’s normal,” to Jack instead of the other way around.
However, life the island was not as happy as they once dreamed while on the island. Jack and Sayid saved Charlie just before he was killed in an airplane toilet. Jin was taken in for questioning at Customs in Los Angeles after losing his temper.
Kate escaped by threatening a taxi driver to drive her out of the airport and Locke was still in his wheel chair. Locke’s knives were also lost and Jack’s father’s body was missing.
On the island Jack, Kate, and Sawyer woke up following the explosion to find they were still on the island. Sawyer is grief stricken due to Juliet’s death and blames Jack for it. Jack also feels guilty about Sayid’s death.
Finally, Ben realizes that he was tricked into killing Jacob by the Man in Black. Jacob had been trying to keep the Man in Black on the island, because although Locke had not wanted to go home, the Man in Black now did.
The final season will tie the two story lines together. After these new revelations, there are many more questions for fans to consider. Anticipation is very high for next Tuesday’s episode.
