Etiquette is not necessarily something that comes to mind when thinking of Valentine's dates. Instead we envision perfect dates; expensive food and romantic strolls that last long into the evening. However, etiquette is something that should be considered when it comes to Valentine's Day. It is important for us to think of our date and how we are treating him or her and not just how she or he treats us. It is simple to have good date etiquette and especially on Valentine's Day we need to be concious of the couples around us as well when we are out.
  • Don't answer your cell phone in the middle of dinner, and if you are on a date with someone you don't know very well, you might want to consider turning it off all together.
  • Texting should ride in the same boat; don't do it.
  • It is still fair to say that whoever does the asking, does the paying. It is not uncommon now however, for dates to split the check, it may be something you might want to discuss when planning the date, especially if you plan it together.
  • If you can't cook, it is probably best to make reservations to save yourself the hassle and trouble of an unpleasant dinner which may lead to a bad night. If need be, get a babysitter, and get it early.
  • Get the card early. The worst cards are left on the shelf on the day of.
  • Flowers are like a picture, worth a thousand words. It goes both ways, both men and women can enjoy a gift of beautiful flowers, keep in mind the recepient's favorite flower and/or color and when buying roses, be careful not to send the wrong message with the wrong colored rose.
  • Meaningful gifts don't have to be expensive.  Plan your date on a budget, unless you have money to spare. It is embarrasing to have a credit card declined and a home cooked dinner with lit candles and yummy chocolates can be just as good.
  • Table etiquette is just as important as general date etiquette. Don't chew with your mouth open, don't eat at some place messy if you can help it, such as a wings place or spaghetti factory. Don't hold your fork like you are trying to make your momma mad. Men, if you are aiming to be a gentleman, open the door, pull out the chair and don't let nerves get in the way of making eye contact. Don't forget to smile.
  • Even if your significant other isn't all about the hype of the day, don't forget to let them know they are loved and how much you care.
