If you want to be safe Trick-or-Treating this year, here are some tips, that are sure to keep your children safe.
- Only let your children Trick-Or-Treat during the daytime unless accompanied by an adult (If you don't feel comfortable with that considering recent events, make sure they have an adult you trust with them)
- Plan a safe route so parents know where their older children will be at all times. Set a time to return home, and make sure that your child is old enough and responsible enough to be out alone.
- Let your children know not to cut through back alleys and fields. Make sure they know to stay in populated places and not to wander through an unknown area. Stay in well lighted areas, at familiar homes in your neighborhood, unless accompanied by an adult. If it is dark, make sure to only knock on door or ring doorbells that indicate they would like trick-or-treaters.
- Small children should never be allowed to go out alone on Halloween.
- NEVER, let your children eat unwrapped candy unless made by you, or they have been examined by you or a trusted adult.
- Instruct your child, never to go into the home of a stranger or get into their car.
- Make sure your child, and/or teenager carries a flashlight, glowstick or has a reflector on their costume, to avoid getting hit by cars.
- If you feel safe enough to let your children go out during the day without an adult, make sure they know to stay together as a group and to be home before it starts to get dark, and to call home if anyone is missing.
