There are many stressors in our lives and they come in every shape and size. From our children, to our in-laws, to our jobs and the money issues that come with our jobs, there is always something that can cause us to have stress in our lives.  One way to dramatically reduce that stress is to have an outlet for it.  That outlet doesn't have to be something elaborate or even expensive, it can be something as simple as a song that relaxes you, or a stress ball you can squeeze when something or someone gets under your skin. Here are some simple instructions for making your own stress ball.

Materials Needed

  • Party Balloon
  • Flour
  • Funnel
  • Scissors

Instructions:

  • Either blow up the balloon a little bit and let the air out, or stretch it out by pulling it apart using your hands.
  • Using the funnel, fill the balloon with flour, but don't fill the neck of the balloon.
  • Tie the end into a knot to avoid spilling the flour from the balloon.
  • Get another balloon and cut the majority of the neck from it.  Place this balloon over the outside of the other balloon to avoid a mess if a hole should develop.
  • That's it. You're done. You can now squeeze away you stress at work or at home with this easy and very inexpensive stress ball.

Did you know that along with the rich traditions of St. Patrick's Day also comes a rich historical background that may fascinate you? The day has significant religious meaning and was originally a celebration of the "baptisimization" of the Irish nation.  It has since, been changed into a more secular and non-religious holiday although the legends and some of the religious traditions and history still remain. It is now a day of feasting and celebration for the Irish culture and you can see it played out all over the world.

St. Patrick is also known as the patron saint of Ireland by the Catholic people. He is not Irish, but has been adapted into their way of life and now a celebration exists to honor him. Patrick was born into an english family, and kidnapped and sold in Ireland as a slave. He had a dream one night, while in Ireland that he could escape and go back to his family; he later did so. He then joined a monastary and learned as much as he could about God.  After learning all he could, according to legend, he was told to return to Ireland and teach them what he had learned. So, with the Pope's blessing on his shoulders, he returned to Ireland to teach them about God. He converted many, including members of the royal family. His mission to Ireland lasted almost 20 years and he died there in AD 461, on you guessed it, March 17th.

Some symbols of St. Patrick's Day include:

The Leprechaun: The Leprechaun is a Celtic fairy and has become the number one symbol of St. Patrick's Day. According to legend, Leprechauns are unfriendly and unconcerned with anything but their gold. They are cobblers (shoe makers) and are said to have a hidden pot of gold. Legend says that you can find the leprechauns treasure by following the sound of his hammering on the shoes. When you find the leprechaun you can only force him to tell you where the treasure is by threat of bodily harm, and if you break eye contact with the leprechaun for even a second he will vanish and all chances of treasure hunting will be lost. You must be careful however, they are tricky creatures and can usually trick you into looking away.

The Shamrock: Also a popular symbol of the holiday is a three leaf clover, an ancient symbol of the goddess Brigit. The shamrock was also a symbol of defiance, and in some places it was banned. Three is also Ireland's magic number, and with that bit of knowledge comes a greater understanding of why the little three leafed plant is such an important symbol to the Irish tradition.

The Blarney Stone: The Blarney Stone is another popular St. Patrick's Day symbol. The stone is set in the Blarney Castle, and legend says that if you kiss it, you will be able to speak with convincing eloquence.  The true magical properties and stories of the blarney stone aren't completely set in stone, but some believe a witch, whom the king saved from drowning set a spell on it to bring good luck to those who believed in it, and did so by kissing the stone. The blarney stone is in an awkward place, so if you want to kiss it, you have to hold onto railing, bend over backwards and downwards to kiss the stone.

  • They are short term loans, used as a financial solution when unexpected bills or unforeseen expenses arise.
  • They are meant to be payed back on your next paycheck, and only cause problems for consumers when they try to keep the loan for extended amounts of time.
  • The interest rates are MUCH less than paying an overdraft or late fee on bills and bank accounts. (Especially considering some fees continue to add up everyday).

Spring is almost here! With that good news, comes cleaning time. Spring has traditionally been a time to start fresh, to clean out and declutter the things that you don't need to leave your house smelling, looking and feeling fresh and clean.  I have included in this blog some fresh tips and tricks to better organize and clean your home when it comes time.  It isn't always easy to find time to do it all at once, so don't stress out if you can't spend an entire day cleaning. Sometimes it is less stressful and more beneficial to you to spread it out a little bit. Happy cleaning!

  1. Start at the top and work your way down.  This applies to basically all dusting and cleaning procedures. When you start scrubbing at the top, the dirt and dust will fall to the bottom, therefore making the final clean sweep the most productive of all. Do walls opposite down to up, to avoid water streaks.
  2. When cleaning, make sure you have all the tools you need to avoid having to run all over the house, or to the store multiple times to get what you need.
  3. Make a checklist and organize it, with what you need to get done.
  4. An old sock, used as a mit, makes for a great wood polisher or cleaner.
  5. Wash instead of dusting small knick knacks, etc.
  6. Don't mix common cleaning products, it may turn an otherwise perfectly harmless product toxic.
  7. You can make your own window washer and use newspapers to clean windows to save money.
  8. When cleaning the bathroom, if you run the shower on hot for a few minutes, it should help to loosen all the built up dirt and make it easier to clean.
  9. To clean white sinks, place a paper towel in the bottom of the sink, saturate with bleach and let it sit for a few hours.
  10. An open box of baking soda in the fridge will absorb odors for about a month.
  11. Use a bounce dryer sheet to remove static cling from televisions, thread, pantyhose and a number of other items.

These are just a few ways to help you out when you are starting your spring cleaning.  They are easy, economical and time saving.

Community Outreach

March 8, 2010 by Heidi R

Giving back to the communities where we live and work is a big part of Check City's commitment to our customers. We believe that since our communities give so much to us, the least we can do is to give back to our communities. Volunteers and financial support are given each year to a number of organizations we have chosen.  If you have a tax exempt status of 501(c)(3) contact one of our store managers to see if we can help support your efforts to help your program.  We believe that when people serve and give back they gain a greater appreciation for what they have, and a deeper knowledge of themselves and for the world around them.

Here are a few of the organizations we currently contribute volunteer service and financial means to:

Muscular Dystrophy Association of Las Vegas

Many people have heard of Muscular Dystrophy but are a little unsure about what it is. Muscular Dystrophy is a disease affecting your muscles and there are many different strains of the disease. Most people with Muscular Dystrophy have very little control and usage of their muscles and are left with the disease for life, because as a side effect, their muscles waste away. Most people with this disease are confined to wheel chairs and some of us may feel uncomfortable or unsure about how to talk to or approach them.  They are just regular people, like you and me, and just want to be treated that way. If you would like to learn more about ways you could help this association in your area, visit the Muscular Dystrophy Association Volunteer Page and scroll all the way to the bottom. There are local and national events you can participate in.

United Cerebral Palsy of Utah

On the website for the foundation, they explain exactly why they donate so much time and resources to helping these people and we would like to say that we have developed the same philosophy. "Foundations for Independence (FFI) provides services to children and adults. It is the belief of the Board of Directors and staff at FFI that individuals have the right to develop emotionally, intellectually, physically, recreatively, socially, and vocationally to their fullest potential. FFI serves individuals of any age, race, color, national or ethnic origin, or developmental disability. FFI has several programs in place to support these beliefs." Those with cerebral palsy have damage to the brain, usually occuring before birth and the aim of this foundation is to give back to those who deserve it. If you would like to donate your time or money visit The Foundations for Independence website and click on the donation link. Over 80% of the money donated goes straight to the programs and services for the disabled they help.

Police Athletic League of Salt Lake City (P.A.L.)

P.A.L. is an organization dedicated to the positive education and development of youth.  They use althletic and recreational activities to (in their own words)

  • create trust and understanding between police officers and youth
  • provide mentoring opportunities for youth
  • connect youth with strong and positive role models in the community
  • encourage healthy decision making and self-esteem, and
  • create and promote community partnerships and involvement
They have various events your youth can attend that will get them involved in the community and your local youth sponsors. Visit the Salt Lake P.A.L. site for event and other information.

At many of our store locations we have canisters where you can throw in your loose change and it will go to the Foundations for Independence which helps support the Cerebral Palsy efforts that were previously mentioned, as well as a number of other diseases.

Check City also donates to Sub for Santa and we have our own Warm Hearts program in which we ask for used coats to be donated each winter in order to provide warm coats to those in need.   CheckCity.com as well as this blog offers you a way to find out about our latest Community Service Projects and efforts. You may also contact us on the Questions portion of the website if you want to know how you can help.
