Community Outreach

March 8, 2010 by Heidi R

Giving back to the communities where we live and work is a big part of Check City's commitment to our customers. We believe that since our communities give so much to us, the least we can do is to give back to our communities. Volunteers and financial support are given each year to a number of organizations we have chosen.  If you have a tax exempt status of 501(c)(3) contact one of our store managers to see if we can help support your efforts to help your program.  We believe that when people serve and give back they gain a greater appreciation for what they have, and a deeper knowledge of themselves and for the world around them.

Here are a few of the organizations we currently contribute volunteer service and financial means to:

Muscular Dystrophy Association of Las Vegas

Many people have heard of Muscular Dystrophy but are a little unsure about what it is. Muscular Dystrophy is a disease affecting your muscles and there are many different strains of the disease. Most people with Muscular Dystrophy have very little control and usage of their muscles and are left with the disease for life, because as a side effect, their muscles waste away. Most people with this disease are confined to wheel chairs and some of us may feel uncomfortable or unsure about how to talk to or approach them.  They are just regular people, like you and me, and just want to be treated that way. If you would like to learn more about ways you could help this association in your area, visit the Muscular Dystrophy Association Volunteer Page and scroll all the way to the bottom. There are local and national events you can participate in.

United Cerebral Palsy of Utah

On the website for the foundation, they explain exactly why they donate so much time and resources to helping these people and we would like to say that we have developed the same philosophy. "Foundations for Independence (FFI) provides services to children and adults. It is the belief of the Board of Directors and staff at FFI that individuals have the right to develop emotionally, intellectually, physically, recreatively, socially, and vocationally to their fullest potential. FFI serves individuals of any age, race, color, national or ethnic origin, or developmental disability. FFI has several programs in place to support these beliefs." Those with cerebral palsy have damage to the brain, usually occuring before birth and the aim of this foundation is to give back to those who deserve it. If you would like to donate your time or money visit The Foundations for Independence website and click on the donation link. Over 80% of the money donated goes straight to the programs and services for the disabled they help.

Police Athletic League of Salt Lake City (P.A.L.)

P.A.L. is an organization dedicated to the positive education and development of youth.  They use althletic and recreational activities to (in their own words)

  • create trust and understanding between police officers and youth
  • provide mentoring opportunities for youth
  • connect youth with strong and positive role models in the community
  • encourage healthy decision making and self-esteem, and
  • create and promote community partnerships and involvement
They have various events your youth can attend that will get them involved in the community and your local youth sponsors. Visit the Salt Lake P.A.L. site for event and other information.

At many of our store locations we have canisters where you can throw in your loose change and it will go to the Foundations for Independence which helps support the Cerebral Palsy efforts that were previously mentioned, as well as a number of other diseases.

Check City also donates to Sub for Santa and we have our own Warm Hearts program in which we ask for used coats to be donated each winter in order to provide warm coats to those in need.   CheckCity.com as well as this blog offers you a way to find out about our latest Community Service Projects and efforts. You may also contact us on the Questions portion of the website if you want to know how you can help.

Are there walls throughout your house that are bare?  Big white walls, or really walls of any color, can be quite boring and you may be surprised at how much a simple wall hanging or decoration could brighten your day.  Try out a few of these ideas to see if your home feels anymore alive and colorful. There are ideas for everyone from someone on a budget, to one who has the money to spend a little more on their wall hangings.  These ideas are a great way to spruce up a room without going all out and you may be surprised at how much you will love the little added color and life they bring to your home.

A Giant Map: Are you a world traveler or do you someday aspire to visit the world? Here is a great way to incorporate your love of geography and world travel into your home.  By a large world map. You can get one that looks more antique or one that is a little newer. Its up to your preference as to what would better match your home and style.  Make sure not to spend too much on an elegant map because you are going to cut it into 8.5 by 11 inch pieces which you will then frame in whatever color frames you prefer (try to keep the frames the same color) and then you can mount them on your wall in the original order of the map.  It will add a little bit of dimension to a flat map on a flat wall while still giving you the same effect of having a map on your wall.  You could also use a specific city if you love New York, etc. no fax payday loans

Fabric Art: Is there an old blanket from your grandmother that means a lot to you but is just falling apart and you arent sure what to do with it? How about that bow tie that your dad gave you or the dress your mom passed down that you are too afraid to get rid of because it might hurt their feelings or fade their memories.  Turn these little memories into art. If your family members are still living, get permission from them to make those little gifts into pieces of art that you can see everyday to remember them by.  Put the bow tie next to a cutout part of your mom's dress. Be creative.  Frame them and put them in a special place.

Frame Art: Go to your local hand me down store such as DI or Goodwill and find some frames that fit your personality and style.  Pick out as many as you want, they will probably only be a few bucks at the most, and bring them home. If you are going for a funky look, pick frames with odd shapes, and different colors. If you would prefer something a little more elegant on the other hand, try to find frames with more traditional shapes and colors.  Bring them home and put them on that boring wall just as they are, just the frame. You may want to remove the glass or plastic as well and store them in a safe place.

Operation Warm Hearts

December 7, 2009 by Heidi R

Check City recently partnered with Catholic Community Services in a Community Service effort called Operation Warm Hearts. For the past three years, Check City has collected gently used sweaters, blankets and coats, for all ages in order to help provide for those in need. This year the drive ran November 2nd through the 30th and the response was once again remarkable. All donations will be given to Catholic Community Services, which will then provide the warm clothes to those in need.  Fox 13 news covered the story as Check City store managers loaded the bags full of warm clothing into their cars to deliver.  Follow this link to watch a video on the story.

To see what other community outreach programs Check City participates in, please visit our community outreach page located on our website.
